Far Away In Your Mind

Here's the Hecker. Instrumental stuff. I am just getting familiar with him, so giving a description probably wouldn't do it justice. Hear nothing but good things though.

Tim Hecker - An Imaginary Country

Rocks You Can Wear

Topaz Rags is some new NNF stuff fo dat azz. Wobbly and sparse piano and haunted vox, just like I like em. Thought someone said that there are person from PHaunt and Robedoor somewhere on this, but not for sure. Sounds like it though. If it were PHaunt it'd be something like Beast That You Are, perhaps. They have a tape out, too, that i ordered. Haven't seen any links for it yet.

Surf's Up

aboard a title wave

courtesy of Atease via What, iirc, this is the new Wavves album

Wavvves

ps - who the shit outbid my $48 ante for the beach demon/weed demon 45 on da bay the other day??? it's a 7 inch of some dude w under 120k last.fm plays. people started to learn my gameplan, huh.

Creepin On Ah Come Up

No, not Bone Thugs N Harmony's debut EP, rather, weird folk stuff that you probably already have. If not, get it. It's free and really really good. I would buy it, but it's out of print and costs like $80 on da bay. If I had an extra 80 bones, I would spend it on this.

Woods Family Creeps - Woods Family Creeps

the nineties

Ok. I have a feeling Cold 187um (the producer, he also raps tho), smokes PCP while doing ATL albums. There is just a very specific sound that they have. It's not not typical 90's West Coast Gangsta Shit, but it's not typical, either.

Back story is like Above The Law got signed to Ruthless Records (NWA/Eazy-E's label) around the time 100 Miles & Runnin' came out, and just after the D.O.C. was in the car accident, iirc. You can tell, on the first album, without looking for the date by the structure of the album. Ruthless was trying to do something specific with their pre-NWA break up signed artists, with crew songs at the end, etc etc. Blood Of Abraham and those post-break up guys don't count because Ruthless just got weird - outside of Bone Thugs of course - after that. Eazy didn't really have any idea without Dre and Cube. What I am trying to get at, more than that, is that this is when you can start to see the evolution of Dr. Dre's production career. People have always said that he has these sort of ghost-producers, guys who are coming up with skeleton beats, and Dre just knows how to take an outline and fill it in well (at least well enough to be mainstream and sell gazillions of records). Well, Straight Outta Compton wasn't really anything dynamic production-wise, but after that, after Ice Cube left, Dre got real good at producing. Like his drums were different, he was using these deep funk gloom Moog lines, and this is something that, at least for the Efil4Zaggin and partly into The Chronic, can be directly attributed to Cold 187um. He had a particular style, esp on their first album, Livin Like Hustlers (which, fwiw, had a song called Ballin like two decades before half these fools were yelling that). But it was still unbalanced, and was generally jumbled sounding.

Anyhow, Time Will Reveal is an ATL album from after their days at Ruthless, when they were signed to Tommy Boy, during a weird part of West Coast rap where guys had kind of figured out what worked and what sold, and everyone was trying to make gangsta albums to make a quick buck. But what's different about this is that it's almost like post-west coast rap. Above The Law, here in my opinion, came out with an album well after people really were paying attention to their records that sounds like an 'I don't care' sort of attitude, but not completely. The synths creep around like no other album from that time period. Stuff that shouldn't be put together on a song is put together here, and it works. I've been listening to the single 100 Spokes non stop since finding this, and it's crazy. Like a demo, it has parts where you can imagine there should be more vocals, namely the end of the first verse, and the bridge. There is a girl singing in a style that shouldn't fit the sound. The synth is a low end key preset on what sounds like a Microkorg, which, being that it was put out in 96 may or may not be correct, as I'm not sure how long that keyboard has been around, that fuzzes around another wobbly banged out two or three keys from a more normal sounding piano. I'm gushing now and realize people probably won't make it this far, but whatever. These are the things I hold dear, and nostalgia is as significant as any other reason to like things like music.

The Darling Daughters of Noise

Yes! We, or at least I, have been waiting on this. Just copped from EXBX, and can't wait to get it. Track 2 sees more strings than we are accoustomed to on P'Haunt tapes, and it's a welcomed addition to an already dope as eff sound.

Pocahaunted - Gold Miner's Daughter (from ill formed whom we love very much, just check the blogroll). Was also on Hipinion's Listening Party thread... BTW, Nathan, you need to let me in.)

Edit: Illformed doesn't steal links as far as i know. Sorry, was confusing it with BlochasGratis or WTF. They stole yesoos' links all the time.

Empty Nest

Haven't posted for a couple days because semester started/ been mainly listening to 90's gangsta shit, and figure most people here don't care about that so much. Just picked this up, not too sure what all is on it, but am assuming it's remixes/extra tracks from the album before In Ear Park. A Why? remix of Sailing By Night, couple live songs, etc etc. If you like Grizzly Bear/D.O.E. 320 bitrate

Trombone Ron

Rusty Santos is basically Animal Collective/Paw Track's best dude. He records many of the albums released on Paw Tracks as well as Sung Tongs, etc. His own music is like the minor league version of AC. The Heavens really frustrates me because he gets into these fits of genius, only to quickly abandon them in favor of something lessor. Eternity Spans, however, finds a nice balance, though the highs aren't as high. He himself is probably really high.

...And now for something a little different. I made this a while ago. It's noise pop I guess. Think No Age underwater with some sloppy guitar playing. It'll be released on tape soon so yeah. Tell me whatcha think.

Capsizing

So I bought this on tape (84/100, bitches) a while back (from DNT), and honestly didn't listen to it a whole bunch. Then today I was doing my normal internet thing and I found out that this is another band that Wavves is in. Crazy (Also came to understand that Traum Ecke is Ducktails, and I had that one sitting around my bedroom, too. Gotta love when stuff like that happens). It's not as, uh, rock as Wavves as Wavves is, though I wouldn't go so far as to say it's that different than Beach Demon/Weed Demon. It's cool. The last joint is probably my favorite.

Fantastic Magic - Witch Choir

Water the mound

Hi there. To start off my being here, I decided to post one of my favorite albums of 2008. Yes, from the cover, it seems like another indie folk album but it isn't. It's the first thing in a while that I've actually been able to call "beautiful". I really can't compare it to anything else. It's like the Women album, it's hard to explain. I almost knew nothing about this band. I heard two tracks on their myspace page and ordered it. So, yeah. It's hard to evaluate so download this and buy it if you enjoy it. It's like Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 with some folk influences. It's all over the place.

Hermit Thrushes - Benaki

In Charge Of Sweating It Out

The Leak is on! If you like Silent Shout, and always wondered what it would sound like if you stripped the darkness-offsetting-beats, well, wonder no longer! I still think homegirl is the closest to an actual publishable poet in modern music. Something about not understanding English well tends to bring out cool word combinations.

amharic

the first time i heard Mulatu Astatke i was at work and someone put in the broken flowers soundtrack. i fell in love... or lust. my palms began to sweat and my heart began to beat fast. i was ready for it.
i mean, how could you not like funky jazz from Africa? the drums, the guitars, the grooves. this is the kind of shit Dj Shadow fans will enjoy and want to have the sex with. DO IT!

Swimming in a Basement Full of Gold Coin

Why you should buy from DNT? Because Tynan puts out dope shit like this, of course! Side A is Ducktails (wooo oooh), general DT fair, Jersey summers on the shore, throwing frisbees to sweet dogs and doggs; Side B is Mudboy, who is always doing some cool shit, these are really some summertime jams, like good old G-funk but more like 4-track cassette funk. Two good artists to put together on a tape split. If you guys and gals like Mudboy, let me know, cuz there's more in the back.

Speaking of Gold Coin, does anyone remember the Game Boy game Wario and the 7 Gold Coins or some shit? Man, I need the old o.g. Game Boy back in my life. Heh. I'm not bitter, it's just humorous in my opinion to add some inane shit to every post. :) It's a beautiful day.

Bored-ing hard

I'm going to admit to not having listened to this band until a week ago, after finally having spun a remix 12" I bought at Shake It in Cinci. They are crazy, and all over the place, but constant and solidified. But always moving. Lots of Drums. Yoshimi-Pee or whatever has to be the Yoshimi of Flaming Lips fame, right? I mean, Boredoms are on Warner Bros in Japan, so maybe in some weird, cross-promotion only Coyne would think of? If you like Black Dice, I recommend this. For serious, this is on some astral plane campfire tribal moonwalk shit. (files over 100 mb are megaupload)

Boredoms - Chocolate Synthesizer
Boredoms - Vision Creation Newsun
Boredoms - Pop Tatari
Boredoms - Super AE

just in case you don't have this

one of my all time favorite albums. SAB2 was my going to bed music. i had to skip to track 3 though... it was just so soothing (and track 2 scared the shit out of me).
i guess this is one of those classic ambient albums everyone has or has heard. if you haven't listened to this yet, you should. it's beautiful, haunting (this word is used too much to describe music, but in this case... it fits), and in 320 bitrate!
which is why i had to up it in rapidshare. sorry about that. but there are two discs, so if you have to wait the x amount of minutes to download the second disc, at least you have something to listen to. am i right?!?!?!?
INANE!

Any Measured Flow or Movement, Symmetry

Mark McGuire is the new cum-laude of new skool drone academy. You just can't get enough of his magical rhythmic auras beaming your skull after hearing Guitar Meditations. This is the live outtake from thursday-club.net, Mark McGuire live @ Grog Shop. Absorb the atmosphere and fly yourself through the cosmic fuzzy licks and check out the healing outro. Nuff shed.

Monkey Flippin' with the Funky Rhythms

Maaaannn. I was over on my main man A-1's Know Good Music blog and he's been posting these DJ Premier videos where Preemo talks about all the classics and the back stories and it made me reminisce, esp when he got on the topic of Illmatic. It's so good, fuck the hype and all that. Best beats, best rhymes, best flows... If you know about yet don't have this I can't trust you as a human being. Upload is 320 quality; Washington's go to wifey, you know how it goes.

Nas - Illmatic

last.fm

Welp, we started a MoralAdventure last.fm group. I encourage people to join and all that, it would help make the blog better, maybe, but more importantly, I've always wanted a forum to call my own. Eh.

Knock 'em out the box

Been jamming so hard on this the past few days! Got the link from ThunderGongz, and it's still active, and want to give him complete credit, as his blog is rad as eff. Kind of maybe similar to Ducktails in a way... but from the first track you know it's supposed to put you in that zone. Tunes to zone out to, a nice stream flowing between your ears.

Mark McGuire - The Garden Of Eternal Life

Hayes and Ye Ol' Guitars

Hey macho men and women, sorry for joining this way too late. I've been under a rock. So this is Vetiver's latest all covers outing before their newest LP (soon) and it's a follow-up album for Thing of the Past, which is also all covers. Vetiver has been my favorite group since they released s/t and it was an eternal love since. Cabic's voice is timeless.

for pascal

minor keys, dark but not hard, and maybe a bit nuts (peanuts). this was probably posted on goldenhymn at some point, but i didn't feel like looking for it.
it's a pretty good album, though it's not their best work... i enjoyed 'pyramids' a bit more. shilzzz posted that here a while back.

the vocalist sounds like nails to a chalk board at times... much like the vocalist from high places. but there is a different quality; pit er pat gives off a spooky/"ghostly" vibe that would be used in a black and white horror movie from back in the day. the kind where the people move really fast because of the film used.
INANE!

do you know what's happening

Mi Ami is another of my favs. Tried to find this on wax forever and finally caught my cut at DNT some time back. It's like GGD with a bit more change jangling in the pockets. Recommended.

Mi Ami - African Rhythms

Money Ain't A Thang (no, seriously, it doesn't exist)

Saw this over at Slappinghappy, and then again after a dope ass article on DJ Screw on Kick To Kill, and yeah, it's pretty necessary. Much like the Zeitgeist addendum (though it looks older and is probably where Zeitgeist got their shit from).

Max, mostly

Post-Classical. Someone out there needs to really throw their shovel into that genre. Seems like there'd be a lot of room to cover. This is supposed to fall under that category, though post makes me thing of scratchy and drowned recordings, with it being like a more classically trained and organized Sigur Ros, with no vocals (there is a narrator of sorts, but it doesn't get in the way), and less melodrama. Good reading music.

Max Richter - Blue Notebooks

Grab my crotch because I'm top notch

For Pringles, who liked the Bobb Bruno. Side A is Goliath Bird Eater, which is a lot different than the Bruno solo stuff; this is more driving guitars, it's hard, but not like omg the devil is about to steal my soul hard. IDK. This isn't so much my thing, inane as that may be. Side B is Menstrual Cyclone by Sasqrotch, with what starts off as free-psych jamming, kind of stares at itself for a minute, then goes into some drone guitar work, then moves to an in-between of the first two movements to finish you off.

Goliath Bird Eater/ Sasqrotch - Split

Girls, Girls, Girls

This is for Chris, who generally hates modern records and couldn't even name 10 2008 albums he liked for a top 10 list at the record store. He liked this quite a bit, I believe. As inane as it is to say, sharing music with friends is a great joy I have in this life.

I liked Skeleton quite a bit, and their new EP, Reviver, just leaked. Haven't listened yet, but people are saying it's a good look. Hurry up, though, because PPM was on top of those Skeleton links.

Shilzzzzzzz B.O. 0.8.

It was a crazy year-in-music for me. Took a ton of turns to unexpected places I didn't know existed. I spent wayyyy too much money on records from DNT, but it was all well worth it. Night People and NNF had some of my favorite releases and Charles Hamilton absolutely demolished the rap mixtape game. If anything, it proved that you can't predict what's going to happen or try to command the future, you just have to take it as it comes and get excited as fuck when cool shit comes to your attention.

Ducktails - II

Horse Steppin!!!!!!!!!!! Album sounds how album looks. Sun Araw had a pretty decent year, eh?

Sun Araw - Beach Head

Magic Lantern - High Beams

Killer Mike is maybe the best of the good rap group's crew of friends best rapper group of rappers. Starting with a good verse on Stankonia that he wrongly and unapologetically called 'a classic,' and having the second best verse on "The Whole World," KM has been putting in work. I am the kind of person that believes the Dungeon Family album is a classic, and Andre3k's verson on Slimm Calhoun's first single is one of the better stylistically-executed of his career, and that Goodie Mob is gravely underrated, and highly enjoyed the Purple Ribbon albums... Basically I'm a big fan of anything that comes out from under the OutKast umbrella. Mike has a knack for picking beats that his Red Bull'd flow and gravely voice legos perfectly on. Here he sounds like a man desperate to get a point across, as if he knows fewer and fewer people are listening to him the more diluted Outkast becomes as a product, and is doing everything to stay afloat, and this kind of mirrors his message for his fans. It makes for honesty. That should be the movement.

Killer Mike - I Pledge Allegiance To The Grind II

Growing - All The Way

I don't know. They had a string of pretty good stuff this year, but I'm still of the ilk that you should tone down the amount of releases in favor of only the really good stuff. It's all good though. This is their supposed dub album, with Bobb Bruno on percussion.

Pocahaunted - Island Diamonds (CD Reissue w/Extra tracks)

This really came out of nowhere for me, and I don't like to travel into the metal section at our store. The word metal... the sort of darkness implied by the genre admittedly scares me off. This is really good, though. Plodding through your ears, there are parts that remind me of a slightly harder version of White Magic. Earth is good for really any situation other than clubbing. And I don't club, so it's always good for me.

Earth - The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull

Teeth Mountain - Teeth Mountain

Sean McCann - Sway

Crystal Stilts - Crystal Stilts

High Places - High Places

He murdered the rap game this year. Get on this shit now, I promise you, before he turns into shit and gets killed by television. I went into the second half of this year convinced that Lil Wayne (which would be in my top 15, but you can find that link anywhere, so it'd be redundant) had done everything a flow could do. That sort of heroin silk sheet on a clothes line riding the wind style of rap. Hamilton has all that on an appeal that seems to be more broad, as he also plays several instruments as well as all that rap crap. It's 2009. Can we finally lose that argument about whether rap is a legit genre now? Serious.

Charles Hamilton - Outside Looking In
Also, check out his website here. It has this, along with, iirc, 7 other free mixtapes that he put out this year as a marketing ploy for a real full length. Goooooood. (looks like there may be a screw up with the new year on those clocks... if those don't get fixed, I'm re-uping the discog, no worries)

Gang Gang Dance - Saint Dymphna

I really like Miller's guitar work, and the b-side here is a perfect example, where 7 minutes seems like 3 and you want that 3 to go on for 15. Thank God for the repeat function!

Evan Miller - S/T C16

Not only did he put out what is probably my 3rd or 4th favorite album of the year, he responded within 5 minutes to a myspace I sent him (no, I'm not that guy... this is really the only time I've done that). Will let him speak for himself:
hi justin,
thanks for the great letter, i will try and answer these questions. Snail's Pace is really kind of a homage to Azalia Snail (hence the title). On her album "Deep Motif", the opener "Aero Sets Me Free" has a section near the end where the entire mix of the song just changes (an edit i think) but anyway, it's one of the ghosts i will forever be chasing because to me, it is just so perfect sounding and wonderful. So for Snail's Pace, i recorded the first half, ran it thru an amp simulator effect (some crappy preset in the recorder i use), then did the second half with a different amp simulator preset, and the running the final mix thru a phasor setting. so just lts of fx on top of more fx etc. all from the ancient Boss BR8 zip disc recorder i use. I do like the first boards of canada lp, but early autechre is more of an influence. and yeah d.o.c. and dre. amazing. 2nd best ruthless release behind straight outta compton and followed by ATL's "Living Like Hustlers" or the first Bone Thugs. hope this was informative. take care-bobb
Bobb Bruno - Clown's Castle

Best of 2008: Yesoos'sssss list

I had a hard time putting these in order... so here you go.
oh, and most of the links are to different blogsites that have the links for the album. its not cool to take links without giving credit to the site that upped it.

1.
flying lotus - Los Angeles
maaaaaan, at first listen I didn't really "get" Los Angeles. i knew i was going to like and was supposed to like it, and when i finally did.... mmmmmmmmm. mind explosion snitches! i hope hip hop takes note and starts to head in the direction of having original experimental producers... or flying lotus just keeps making albums.

2.
Eden Express - Que Amors Que
really, im not sure why this is my number two. it just strikes a chord for me. i don't care for her voice very much, but i like how the album feels. like maybe, living in some latin american country driving in the country roads smoking a cigarette just feeling cool and shit. that would be the life.

3.
Grouper - Dragging a Dead Deer Up A Hill
pretty. depressing. pretty depressing.

4.
The Fun Years - Baby, It's Cold Inside
not fun at all. but im really into sample based modern classical and post-rock... and this sounds like the perfect baby of those two genres.

5.
Bohren & der Club of Gore - Dolores
nothing like metal guys that play jazz. really, nothing like it.

6.
Crystal Stilts - Alight of Night
if you want to be cool, listen to crystal stilts. it's like shopping at american apparel if there is no american apparel in your town.

7.
Department Of Eagles - In Ear Park
grizzly bear. that's all.

8.
Juana Molina - Un Dia
mmmm. argentine goodness. she always makes the best spring time albums. i was playing this in the record store i work at (hipster cred. right there) and one of our regulars said it was good art school student music. yeah, dude.

9.
No Age - Nouns
i always found it hard to say no age. it sounds like noige when people ask who this is when im playing it.... anyway, it's two guys making a bunch of noise.

10.
Valet - Naked Acid
drone, somewhat depressing, makes you feel cool music that no one will get while you're listening to it but will wish they were cool enough to be the one listening.
i keep thinking black lights and stuff.

11.
Beach House - Devotion
lo-fi analogue sounding electronic sad music with a female vocalist

12.
Blue Sky Black Death - Jean Grae: Evil Jeanius
i spit when i rhyme, i rhyme when i spit

13.
m83 - Saturdays=Youth
did the urban outfitters catalog come with a soundtrack?

14.
Brael And Tokyo Bloodworm - Living Language
electronic goodness that i don't feel like explaining too much.

15.
Jacaszek - Treny
beautiful. just effing beautiful.
