儉德大廈 (kimtak building) is a band with an album called "in the forest and the field".

they did not reinvent music and they are not using their instruments in a bizarre, unheard of way to create sounds you've never heard.

but they will calm the shit out of you. and once you feel grounded and drowsy, when you think you can recite the patterns of their notes in your head and that you can already tell where this song is going, THEY ROCK THE SHIT OUT OF YOU.

and whats striking about this is how precise their sound is. its full of rough, distorted, guitar driven textures but its also balanced out with pieces led by piano and blippity-bloopy keys.

this band sounds like an old city at night. its not dangerous to walk the streets at 1 AM, but those streets are crumbling, the trees make terrible sounds when the wind blows through them and the air is smoky.

kimtak building won't blow you away with technical prowess. its the simplicity of the musical verses they construct which allows their sound to be so evocative.

anyway, the album sounds like a savath y savalas release (and some of the tracks are from savath y savalas albums). folky, glitchy, and sleepy.

"I want to shout out God." Heh. I'm serious here. Ok, if there is one period of hip hop i'm not as familiar with, it's the early 90's version of new agers that took the native tongue style waaaay left, ie Arrested Development and PM Dawn. I never really took PM Dawn seriously, but for some reason had been wanting to hear this album, and, to little surprise, found it very cheaply used. It's on some weird, happy, ish, with the regular breakbeat behind some crystalicious (that's a real word, ha), shiny brass buddha statue jazz samples in a contorted new jack swing gone Enya styling. Lyrics like "Reality used to be a friend of mind," and something about Christina Applegate not wanting to get it on with Prince Be, "I wanted her to be a big PM Dawn fan" but that's "just how it goes" he guesses. He raps like a short bus version of Erick Sermon, that slightly homosexual slur and stutter. But really, in retrospect it's not as bad as all this sounds or as harsh as it's critics say, and is almost nice, if you aren't afraid to be cheesy sometimes. Most recognizable here is "Set Adrift On Memory Bliss." I actually kind of like it, bloated abstractions about Jesus included (except 'Shake' which is inexcusable). 320. Prince Be is a singer/ songwriter. So, Pascal, this inane post goes out directly to you (I'm not letting you live that down)

Man, i went to a show of his over a year ago at the Metro in chicago. he had the whole place in like a soul train line zig zagged and we all had to dance through it then add on to the end and put our hands up like a canopy above the dancers. he lets crowd members push the buttons on his machinery... siked to hear this. He told me, after having signed my shirt with a seeing eye pyramid and winged-2012 symbol, that his next album (he was promoting Spiderman Of The Rings, of course, thus referring to Bromst) will be his most popular, then people won't like him as much. real cool dude. you should go to his shows.

(if this review doesn’t seem cohesive, im sorry. im watching brasil vs italy right now. and holy shit, this is a good game. brasil is playing the beautiful game like they should.)

about a month ago i received an email from Jeune Été Records (<---link) looking to get some promotion. they sent me the first two releases from their catalog asking me to do to a review. i often get artists wanting reviews but rarely review, mostly because im lazy, but also because i don’t really care for their music. this isn’t the case for sister crayon and j. irvin dally (i'll post a review for that later along with the plains review). for a new label to release quality like this is impressive.

sister crayon: beautiful voice. think cat power + bat for lashes + cocorosie. i could very easily turn this review into an article from haterville daily, because the influences are worn on the sleeves of sister crayon. but all is forgiven because the talent is vast.
the music on ‘loneliness is my mother's gun’ is broken up into acoustic, keyboard, MPC goodness. im not one to pay much attention to lyrics, so i wont try to delve into what the lyrics mean (even if they are straight forward.. i wouldn’t get it), but the feeling is there and that says more to me than what the words actually are.
one gripe i have with the album is how long it is (over an hour long). all the songs are album worthy, but it gets tiresome at points.
other than that one complaint, sister crayon is VERY promising and i expect the next release to be even better. take note people... and buy the cd, as they are very limited and is very much worth your money.

here is some home listening for you guys that like to lay on the floor and chill. it sounds a bit like vincent gallo + tortoise + trip hop style drums. i read a review complaining that it sounds somewhat disingenuous... the style (record static over the whole track while no record sample is being used, out of tune/guitars drenched in chorus for an old recorded effect) at times can come across that way, but im guessing they did it all for the nookie, so its okay.

It starts off like the transitional parts of a gang gang dance song, but in raga form, the switches in a matter of moments into some super beach chill stuff on side A. Side b is like the first half of side A travelling through a black hole or something.

Ok. I have a feeling Cold 187um (the producer, he also raps tho), smokes PCP while doing ATL albums. There is just a very specific sound that they have. It's not not typical 90's West Coast Gangsta Shit, but it's not typical, either.

Back story is like Above The Law got signed to Ruthless Records (NWA/Eazy-E's label) around the time 100 Miles & Runnin' came out, and just after the D.O.C. was in the car accident, iirc. You can tell, on the first album, without looking for the date by the structure of the album. Ruthless was trying to do something specific with their pre-NWA break up signed artists, with crew songs at the end, etc etc. Blood Of Abraham and those post-break up guys don't count because Ruthless just got weird - outside of Bone Thugs of course - after that. Eazy didn't really have any idea without Dre and Cube. What I am trying to get at, more than that, is that this is when you can start to see the evolution of Dr. Dre's production career. People have always said that he has these sort of ghost-producers, guys who are coming up with skeleton beats, and Dre just knows how to take an outline and fill it in well (at least well enough to be mainstream and sell gazillions of records). Well, Straight Outta Compton wasn't really anything dynamic production-wise, but after that, after Ice Cube left, Dre got real good at producing. Like his drums were different, he was using these deep funk gloom Moog lines, and this is something that, at least for the Efil4Zaggin and partly into The Chronic, can be directly attributed to Cold 187um. He had a particular style, esp on their first album, Livin Like Hustlers (which, fwiw, had a song called Ballin like two decades before half these fools were yelling that). But it was still unbalanced, and was generally jumbled sounding.

Anyhow, Time Will Reveal is an ATL album from after their days at Ruthless, when they were signed to Tommy Boy, during a weird part of West Coast rap where guys had kind of figured out what worked and what sold, and everyone was trying to make gangsta albums to make a quick buck. But what's different about this is that it's almost like post-west coast rap. Above The Law, here in my opinion, came out with an album well after people really were paying attention to their records that sounds like an 'I don't care' sort of attitude, but not completely. The synths creep around like no other album from that time period. Stuff that shouldn't be put together on a song is put together here, and it works. I've been listening to the single 100 Spokes non stop since finding this, and it's crazy. Like a demo, it has parts where you can imagine there should be more vocals, namely the end of the first verse, and the bridge. There is a girl singing in a style that shouldn't fit the sound. The synth is a low end key preset on what sounds like a Microkorg, which, being that it was put out in 96 may or may not be correct, as I'm not sure how long that keyboard has been around, that fuzzes around another wobbly banged out two or three keys from a more normal sounding piano. I'm gushing now and realize people probably won't make it this far, but whatever. These are the things I hold dear, and nostalgia is as significant as any other reason to like things like music.

He records many of the albums released on Paw Tracks as well as Sung Tongs, etc. His own music is like the minor league version of AC. The Heavens really frustrates me because he gets into these fits of genius, only to quickly abandon them in favor of something lessor. Eternity Spans, however, finds a nice balance, though the highs aren't as high. He himself is probably really high.

Then today I was doing my normal internet thing and I found out that this is another band that Wavves is in. Crazy (Also came to understand that Traum Ecke is Ducktails, and I had that one sitting around my bedroom, too. Gotta love when stuff like that happens). It's not as, uh, rock as Wavves as Wavves is, though I wouldn't go so far as to say it's that different than Beach Demon/Weed Demon. It's cool. The last joint is probably my favorite.

It's the first thing in a while that I've actually been able to call "beautiful". I really can't compare it to anything else. It's like the Women album, it's hard to explain. one of my all time favorite albums. SAB2 was my going to bed music. i had to skip to track 3 though... it was just so soothing (and track 2 scared the shit out of me).
i guess this is one of those classic ambient albums everyone has or has heard. if you haven't listened to this yet, you should. it's beautiful, haunting (this word is used too much to describe music, but in this case... it fits), and in 320 bitrate!
which is why i had to up it in rapidshare. sorry about that. but there are two discs, so if you have to wait the x amount of minutes to download the second disc, at least you have something to listen to. am i right?!?!?!?

the vocalist sounds like nails to a chalk board at times... much like the vocalist from high places. but there is a different quality; pit er pat gives off a spooky/"ghostly" vibe that would be used in a black and white horror movie from back in the day. the kind where the people move really fast because of the film used.

Post-Classical. Someone out there needs to really throw their shovel into that genre. Seems like there'd be a lot of room to cover. This is supposed to fall under that category, though post makes me thing of scratchy and drowned recordings, with it being like a more classically trained and organized Sigur Ros, with no vocals (there is a narrator of sorts, but it doesn't get in the way), and less melodrama. Good reading music.

For Pringles, who liked the Bobb Bruno. Side A is Goliath Bird Eater, which is a lot different than the Bruno solo stuff; this is more driving guitars, it's hard, but not like omg the devil is about to steal my soul hard. IDK. This isn't so much my thing, inane as that may be. Side B is Menstrual Cyclone by Sasqrotch, with what starts off as free-psych jamming, kind of stares at itself for a minute, then goes into some drone guitar work, then moves to an in-between of the first two movements to finish you off.

It was a crazy year-in-music for me. Took a ton of turns to unexpected places I didn't know existed. I spent wayyyy too much money on records from DNT, but it was all well worth it. Night People and NNF had some of my favorite releases and Charles Hamilton absolutely demolished the rap mixtape game. If anything, it proved that you can't predict what's going to happen or try to command the future, you just have to take it as it comes and get excited as fuck when cool shit comes to your attention.

Killer Mike is maybe the best of the good rap group's crew of friends best rapper group of rappers. Starting with a good verse on Stankonia that he wrongly and unapologetically called 'a classic,' and having the second best verse on "The Whole World," KM has been putting in work. I am the kind of person that believes the Dungeon Family album is a classic, and Andre3k's verson on Slimm Calhoun's first single is one of the better stylistically-executed of his career, and that Goodie Mob is gravely underrated, and highly enjoyed the Purple Ribbon albums... Basically I'm a big fan of anything that comes out from under the OutKast umbrella. Mike has a knack for picking beats that his Red Bull'd flow and gravely voice legos perfectly on. Here he sounds like a man desperate to get a point across, as if he knows fewer and fewer people are listening to him the more diluted Outkast becomes as a product, and is doing everything to stay afloat, and this kind of mirrors his message for his fans. It makes for honesty. That should be the movement.

Pocahaunted - Island Diamonds (CD Reissue w/Extra tracks)

This really came out of nowhere for me, and I don't like to travel into the metal section at our store. The word metal... the sort of darkness implied by the genre admittedly scares me off. This is really good, though. Plodding through your ears, there are parts that remind me of a slightly harder version of White Magic. Earth is good for really any situation other than clubbing. And I don't club, so it's always good for me.

He murdered the rap game this year. Get on this shit now, I promise you, before he turns into shit and gets killed by television. I went into the second half of this year convinced that Lil Wayne (which would be in my top 15, but you can find that link anywhere, so it'd be redundant) had done everything a flow could do. That sort of heroin silk sheet on a clothes line riding the wind style of rap. Hamilton has all that on an appeal that seems to be more broad, as he also plays several instruments as well as all that rap crap. It's 2009. Can we finally lose that argument about whether rap is a legit genre now? Serious.

thanks for the great letter, i will try and answer these questions. Snail's Pace is really kind of a homage to Azalia Snail (hence the title). On her album "Deep Motif", the opener "Aero Sets Me Free" has a section near the end where the entire mix of the song just changes (an edit i think) but anyway, it's one of the ghosts i will forever be chasing because to me, it is just so perfect sounding and wonderful. So for Snail's Pace, i recorded the first half, ran it thru an amp simulator effect (some crappy preset in the recorder i use), then did the second half with a different amp simulator preset, and the running the final mix thru a phasor setting. so just lts of fx on top of more fx etc. all from the ancient Boss BR8 zip disc recorder i use. I do like the first boards of canada lp, but early autechre is more of an influence. and yeah d.o.c. and dre. amazing. 2nd best ruthless release behind straight outta compton and followed by ATL's "Living Like Hustlers" or the first Bone Thugs. hope this was informative. take care-bobb

In my opinion, this is his most listenable and complete representation of his "coconut drone" vision. Featuring pitch-shifted synth and vigorous hand drumming tape loops, Spencer's fourth-dimensional minimalist drones have been keeping me levitated all week.
